Ivan Bunin worked on the chronicle «The Life of Arsenev» from 1927 to 1933. This is the story of the formation of a young nobleman and poet, Aleksey Arsenev, from infancy to maturity. The chronicle is divided into five books, each tied to a particular stage of the hero’s growth. In the first, we find early impressions, composed of landscapes, descriptions, and the faintest memories. The second is devoted to Arsenev’s school years in the gymnasium—here nature, flowers, and colors give way to everyday life: the home of Rostovtsev, a not-very-well-off townsman, where the main character lives, the atmosphere of a provincial city and its gymnasium. The third part tells of his first loves. The fourth is a sort of travel sketch, describing the hero’s journeys through Russia. With these details, Bunin recreates the life of 19th-century Russia and draws a kind of conclusion for Russian literature of that period. The fifth part, «Lika», is a separate story—one of the best in world literature among books about love. The first novel was published by the magazine «Sovremennye zapiski» in four separate books, without «Lika», which appeared as a completion of the chronicle «as soon as opportunity arose». Vera Bunin, the writer’s wife, believed that Lika is a composite image of women whom Ivan Andreevich loved.
