“Life” is the first novel by the French writer Guy de Maupassant, written in 1883. The work he labored on for six years. Seventeen-year-old Jeanne, the daughter of Baron Le Pertuis de Vaud, leaves the monastery where she spent her teenage years and returns with her parents to the Topia estate in Normandy. Here she meets Julien de Lamar, the son of a ruined nobleman. The young man’s stylish appearance makes a pleasant impression not only on Jeanne, but also on their maid Rosalie, who can’t hide her confusion when she sees de Lamar.
