Josephine and Iris have always been opposites, even though they are sisters. Josephine is modest and restrained—a medieval historian living a quiet life with her husband and two daughters. Iris, on the other hand, is bright and enchanting, preferring the company of high society.
When tragedy strikes Josephine’s life—her husband leaves her for another woman—Iris also decides to change hers. She claims she is writing a historical novel about the Middle Ages and convinces Josephine to become her unofficial co-author.
Now Josephine has to handle many things at once: her stubborn older daughter, who accuses her of abandoning her father; financial difficulties; work on the book; and possibly the appearance of new feelings.
