The Iron Will

Description
The famous tale about Russian and German national characters (1876), not included by Leskov in his lifetime collected works, was brought back from oblivion and republished only during the Great Patriotic War. The expression “Iron Will” was something like an idiom, describing—though not without a touch of irony—the strong-willed traits of the German people and widely used in the mid-19th century. The tale is based on real events from Nikolay Leskov’s life, when he served in the company “Scott and Wilkens” (1857–1860). The firm’s business stretched across all of Russia, and as a representative of the company, Leskov had the opportunity to visit many cities at that time. Those three-year travels across Russia led Nikolay Leskov to begin working as a writer.
