Andrey Astvatsaturov is a St. Petersburg writer, philologist, and essayist, a professor at Saint Petersburg State University (SPbU). He has written the novels “People in the Nude,” “Schnucskamera,” “Autumn in Your Pockets,” “Do Not Feed or Touch the Pelicans,” as well as the essay collection “Chaos and Symmetry.” In “Mirrors and Cobwebs,” humor and precision interweave the traditions of the university, urban, and psychological novel.
The author leads his hero—and the reader alongside him—through the labyrinth of everyday university life, love stories, and behind-the-scenes intrigues among colleagues; through moral trials, detective hints, and a run of comic episodes—toward an almost forgotten, archived Soviet “mirror world.” There, a key to the events of the present is uncovered, along with an understanding of oneself and of how human nature is arranged.
