The Melvilles, Helene, their servant Elizabeth, and the butler Pattridge “hunt” for the green ray across all the Hebrides, landing in frightening and comic situations. Along the way, Helene meets a young painter, Oliver Sinclair—a bold and romantic adventurer—and falls in love with him.
