Description
"The Green Ray" is an adventure novel by the French writer Jules Verne, part of the cycle “Extraordinary Journeys.” Written in 1882. The novel is based on a Scottish legend about the Green Ray, which brings happiness to everyone who sees it.

An indulged young girl—an orphan—Helene Campbell lives in the house of her uncles, the Melvilles. They want her to marry an aristocrat, Aristobulus Ursicklos, a brilliant scientist whom Helene herself doesn’t like. Hoping to put off the unwanted wedding, she says she won’t marry until she sees the green ray. The Melvilles, Helene, their servant Elizabeth, and the butler Pattridge “hunt” for the green ray across all the Hebrides, landing in frightening and comic situations. Along the way, Helene meets a young painter, Oliver Sinclair—a bold and romantic adventurer—and falls in love with him.
