The story, as it turns out, takes place in the city of Saratov, where a 28-year-old citizen who is ideologically unemployed decides—right before New Year—to die on the first day of the year in front of the movie cameras, having arranged it with a friend. The friend is a strange, half-mad character who searches for new directions in art. But there is still one day left until the first, and the entire novel is an account of how the main character spends it. Along the way, the reader is shown the ordinary routines of ordinary citizens in a difficult time: he visits relatives and acquaintances, classmates, and friends—everywhere he provokes them into various actions, more or less according to their understanding. And in most cases, those actions turn out, to put it mildly, not very good. A kind of social realism. But for some reason it’s also a little sad…
