The Irish writer and journalist Maeve Binchy was known not only in her native country, but also beyond it. She wrote 16 novels and several collections of short stories that became bestsellers and received international awards. Her greatest fame came from her first novel “Light a Candle” (1982), which tells the story of the friendship between two girls and their coming of age in the 1940s–1950s on the British Isles. One of the heroines, Elizabeth, is forced to leave London because of the war and go to Ireland, where she meets Eshling. Their friendship endured all difficulties and trials, and they believed that nothing could ever separate them.
