An audiobook that is a classic work of science fiction for middle-school children is the first in the series of books about Professor Challenger.
In 1912, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle—best known for his Sherlock Holmes detective stories—published the science-fiction novel “The Lost World.” It tells of a daring expedition led by Professor Challenger into the Amazon river delta in order to prove the existence of ancient animals. The idea for “The Lost World” came to Conan Doyle after a conversation with his friends, Percy Fawcett and Edwin Lankester, who shared their impressions from an expedition to the mountains on the border of Bolivia and Brazil. These stories so inspired the writer that he began work on the novel at once. It later became extremely popular, was translated into many languages, and has been adapted for film numerous times.
