Luzhin turned his life into a tense chess match in which it is practically impossible to win, but you can try to build a clever defense.
The dacha season is coming to an end. The small Luzhin family is preparing to return to Petersburg, where the young hero will face a new world—his first year of school. This prospect scares him so much that he decides to run away and hides in a half-ruined house lost in the woods. In the attic, he finds a cracked chessboard. This object—still unknown and unfamiliar to him—will soon become the foundation of his world. Luzhin will finish school and become a promising grandmaster. But the hobby of chess gradually turns into passion, and then into obsession. Step by step, Luzhin begins to view life itself as a chess match, where the main thing is to build an impenetrable defense.
