A classic of Chinese literature.
A fantastic novel, an anti-utopia, and a satirical pamphlet all at once.
In addition to the Russian edition, the novel has been translated into English, German, French, and Japanese.
One of Lao She’s best-known works is the fantastic novel “Records of the Cat City.”
As a result of a shipwreck, the main character—the only surviving member of the crew—ends up on Mars, a planet populated by anthropomorphic cats. Their civilization, which once was powerful and majestic and now has more than twenty thousand years behind it, is in decline. A man from Earth gets acquainted with young and old cats, scientists, politicians, and peasants, attempts to “re-educate” the cats, but in the end he witnesses the last days of the Cat State…
The book is an allegory of early 20th-century Chinese society: through the description of Lao She’s fictional state, it criticizes China’s social and political problems.
