In 1931, a fantastic novella by the well-known modern writer Zhang Tian-yі, “Notes from the World of Spirits,” was published. Continuing Swiftian traditions, Zhang Tian-yі wrote what is perhaps the first anti-utopia in Chinese literature, and today it remains one of the peaks of satirical science fiction in China. However, such a biting satire did not appeal to everyone. But the wheel was already turning at full speed. The main character, a certain Mr. Han, became fascinated with spiritualism and decided to make a journey into the beyond—as a “scientific” experiment. And soon he learns that people’s ideas about him differ greatly from “reality.”
