Description
Ekaterina Romanovna Dashkova belongs among the outstanding public figures of Russia in the second half of the 18th century. For many years she was a friend and associate of Empress Catherine II, stood at the head of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences, was the founder of the Russian Academy—a center for the study of the Russian language and literature—was a scholar-philologist and a writer.

Dashkova was a contemporary of five reigns: Elizabeth Petrovna, Peter III, Catherine II, Paul I, and Alexander I. In her "Memoirs" appeared a vast body of historical material, confirmed by archival sources. But perhaps the most interesting in the "Memoirs" is the image of the author herself. This intelligent, energetic woman did much for the development of science and education in Russia.
