“Notes on Popular Education” were written in 1901 by the great Russian educator and scholar Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev. In his book, the eminent enlightener of his time raises the pressing question of the level of education in Russia. Believing that the methods of imparting knowledge are hopelessly outdated, he proposes updating the education system by offering a clear plan of action. He also pays special attention to the development of popular education. Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev wrote numerous works known not only in Russia: “To Know about Russia,” “Lectures on Theoretical Chemistry,” “On the Elasticity of Gases,” and others. Dmitry Ivanovich Mendeleev belongs to the geniuses whose scientific works are known throughout the world, and his research on Russia’s population makes it possible for modern scholars to study its history.
