“Eat, Pray, Love” ends with the story of how, during her trip to Bali, Elizabeth Gilbert met a divorced Brazilian man, Felipe (José Nunes). For an entire year, Felipe and Gilbert kept up a “long-distance” relationship. Ninety days of Gilbert’s boyfriend were spent with her in America, and the rest of the time they lived separately or traveled together around the world.

In spring 2006, the couple returned to the United States. Right in Dallas airport, Elizabeth’s partner was detained. A customs official explained to Felipe that he could enter the country again only if he married his American friend.
