Louis Rousselet (1845–1929) was a French traveler and geographer. In 1863 he was sent to India with the task of collecting monuments of French influence in the Deccan, and in 1865, with the assistance of the British government, he undertook a journey into the interior regions of India, which remained under the rule of native princes, for archaeological and ethnographic purposes. During this trip Rousselet was among the first to study the famous group of Buddhist monuments at Sanchi. He presented the results of his research in a number of articles published in the magazine «Tour du monde» (1871–1873).
Rousselet used his vast experience to create works of fiction. The novel presented in this volume, “The Snake Charmer,” tells of the times of the famous Sepoy Mutiny, one of the most tragic episodes of British rule in India. Its hero, the young prince Nana Sahib, despite the oath of loyalty sworn to Queen Victoria, harbors a plan of revenge and prepares to arrange a bloody massacre for the colonizers. In addition, selected stories from the book “India of the Rajahs” are also published here.
