Nikolai Semenovich Leskov (1831–1895) — an outstanding Russian writer, prose author, and publicist.
To readers is offered the book “A Barren Family,” published at the peak of the writer’s artistic maturity in 1874.
The central theme of the work is opposition between “true” Christianity and the official, institutional version. In the opinion of one of the critics, the heroine of the chronicle is “an example of steadfast virtue, calm dignity, high courage, and rational benevolence toward mankind.” Leskov himself singled out “A Barren Family” from among his works: “I love this piece… It is more mature than those and carefully written… ”
