A Mysterious Murder

In one of the county towns on the banks of a river, far from residential buildings, they discover the body of a rank-and-file soldier of an infantry regiment—Sidorov. Stakes scattered around, a bloodstained peaked cap, and the position of the body indicated that the unfortunate man was desperately fighting for his life. During a further inspection of the corpse, one curious detail was revealed. The killer’s mouth was stuffed with clay and sand—most likely what caused his death. But for whom, and—most importantly—why did someone kill this poor soldier? Was it a domestic conflict among fellow servicemen, or murder out of jealousy? Or maybe there’s a debt involved? The answers to all these questions are what the investigation will have to find out.
