In the late previous century, many works previously banned by censorship began appearing in print. Among them were the books of Andrey Platonov. What is unusual about writer Platonov? Why has interest in his work been growing all over the world? Probably because the themes of his books coincide with humankind’s oldest ideas about the world—but they are presented from the standpoint of a modern individual who absorbed culture, Russian history, and the achievements of the entire world.
Among them is the novella “The Juvenile Sea,” created in 1934 and reaching the reader only in 1986. In it, with extraordinary persuasiveness, the author reflected the absurdity of life in the first years of collectivization and attempted to predict the future of the country.
