Description
The novel duology by Scottish writer Archibald Cronin, "The Young Ones" (1944) and "The Way of Shannon" (1948), is largely autobiographical. The early death of Robert Shannon’s parents forces the six-year-old to seek shelter in the home of relatives, who begin to compete with one another for influence over the boy. The hardships of growing up, conflicts with peers, first friendship and first betrayal, poverty, belonging to a Catholic religious minority, and, as a consequence, the biased attitudes of those around him—Robert will have to experience all of this during his childhood and adolescence. However, determined and persistent, he finds within himself the strength to stay true to his passions and ambitious dreams, break free from the provincial world that is too cramped for him, understand his scientific calling, and take his first steps in his profession.
In the second novel of the duology, Robert is a young, ambitious infectious-disease doctor, recently returned from the war, working at a research institute and standing on the threshold of a landmark discovery in bacteriology. He faces the envy of his colleagues and bureaucratic intrigues, and, unable to compromise, loses his post and is forced—while continuing his investigations—to become a practicing doctor. He also has to face the test of love for Gin Lough, beautiful and intelligent, whose secure, well-provisioned future—planned out in advance by her parents—after meeting Robert can no longer be what it once seemed to be…
