About the performer:
Garkalin Valery Borisovich is a well-known theater and film actor, People’s Artist of Russia (2008).

He was born in 1954 in Moscow. In 1978 he graduated from the Gnesin Musical College (faculty of puppet art). He worked for six years in the traveling theater «People and Puppets», with which he toured the whole country. Later he worked at the S. V. Obraztsov Puppet Theater.

In 1988 he graduated from the variety arts faculty of GITIS and joined the troupe of the Moscow Satire Theatre, where he served until 2001 and played many roles, including Petruchio in Shakespeare’s comedy «The Taming of the Shrew», Khlestakov in Gogol’s «The Government Inspector», Peachum in Brecht’s «The Threepenny Opera», and even Pontius Pilate and the Master in the production «Schizophrenia, As Was Said» based on Mikhail Bulgakov.

At the same time, Valery Garkalin performed on the stage of the «Chelovek» studio theater. In 1996–2000, together with Tatyana Vasilyeva, he staged about ten performances at the «School of Modern Play» theater.

Garkalin’s first success in cinema came in 1989 after the release of S. Bodrov’s crime drama «Katala». His portrayal of the biologist Dezhkin in the series «White Robes» is recognized as one of the actor’s best works. Garkalin’s finest hour was the farcical comedy «Shirley Myrli» (1995), in which he played four roles at once (prize of the «Kinoshock» festival in the nomination «Awards for the Best Roles of 1995»). In total, the actor appeared in more than 60 films and television series.

Valery Garkalin is a professor at RATI (GITIS), artistic director of the variety faculty workshop. He continues to perform in various independent theaters and private productions and takes part in reading programs.
