Description
“Apple Tree” is a novel-biography in which Christian Berkel tells the real story of his parents’ lives. At the center of the plot are young Salla and Otto, who fall in love with each other despite coming from different social backgrounds. Otto is a simple working-class guy, while Salla comes from a bohemian Jewish family. It’s the 30s of the 20th century, and the events unfold in Berlin. When World War II begins, the paths of the lovers diverge. Afraid to die in the flames of the war, Salla leaves Germany. Otto stays in his homeland and becomes a doctor in the Wehrmacht, who, by the duty of service, is soon called to the front. Some time later, both Salla and Otto will become prisoners of war. They will have to overcome many trials, and then something will happen that will forever change their former life…

Christian Berkel’s novel “Apple Tree” became a bestseller in Europe and stayed on the list of the best books in the German edition Spiegel for more than 25 weeks—a real achievement. The book tells the real story of Christian Berkel’s parents’ lives, which he set out to write after his mother—who lived to old age—was diagnosed with dementia. This is an astounding historical canvas created from archives, letters, and travel stories. The novel has been translated into 8 foreign languages and has repeatedly been recognized by the media.
