Afanasy Afanasyevich Fet, also known as Afanasy Afanasyevich Shenshin. 1820–1892. Poet, translator, successful landowner. At the age of 53, he was granted back both his nobility and his surname (Shenshin). The loss of nobility and surname was connected to Afanasy Afanasyevich’s father’s negligence—he did not formalize the marriage in a timely manner and according to the regulations in force. Therefore, Afanasy Afanasyevich spent about half a century getting his surname restored. But even after he regained his nobility and surname, he continued to sign his literary works with his mother’s surname. He served. He rose to the rank of staff rotmaster—higher than a senior lieutenant and lower than a captain, in the translation of the restored titles from the Soviet period and the present time.
