Description
— Masha, we’re twins! Come on, help me! I met a man. Lesha! He’s completely different—together with him I feel like I’m alive. And we want to spend New Year together. To fly away, to break free!
I looked at her, not believing my ears.
— Are you out of your mind!? You have a husband, a daughter! And you want to run off with some—? I couldn’t bring myself to say it out loud— a man, a lover?
Good Lord, what is Natasha even thinking? Has she completely lost her mind?
— He’s not “somebody”! — she flared up. — And this is my only chance to break free from this dull misery, at least for a while! I’m rotting away while still alive in that damn marriage with Dержавин!
— Then get a divorce!
— No. I’m not ready to give up my comfortable life with Vadim. For now— she irritably shrugged— Dержавин is in St. Petersburg on an important deal. He won’t be home for another two weeks; even New Year he’ll spend there.
I refused, but made a mistake—I ended up staying the night at my sister’s house. And in the morning I found her wedding ring, a note, and my bewildered little daughter, who called me “mom.”
And Dержавин returned earlier.
— Miss your wife?
I looked at her, not believing my ears.
