The Taking of Izmail

“The Taking of Izmail” is a novel about how all epochs and events are equally important for Russia: a pre-revolutionary criminal court—and alongside it, scenes from Stalinist, Khrushchev, and Brezhnev times; the heroes are both real and fictional, contemporary language and Old Slavonic stylizations… The novel received the “Russian Booker” award.
