Dave Wallis, a British author, became known for his dystopian work “Only the Lovers Survived.” In the 1960s there were plans to adapt this novel into a film with The Rolling Stones, but the project was never realized. The book describes an epidemic of suicides that swept across the UK, as a result of which adults mass-commit suicide, leaving London under the control of teenagers. The main character, Ernie, and his group break into empty apartments, throw parties, and enjoy freedom—but soon they face a shortage of food and fuel. They will have to stand up to the Kings who have taken Windsor Castle and try to survive in the conditions of nature, once they leave the city due to the plague. The novel raises the question of whether there is a future for this new world. “Only the Lovers Survived” will appeal to those who value dystopias like William Golding’s “Lord of the Flies,” José Saramago’s “Blindness,” and Anthony Burgess’s “A Clockwork Orange.” The book is released in paperback with flaps that can serve as bookmarks so you’ll always remember where you stopped.
