The popular uprising never really flared up—it faded away thanks to the efforts of the great magical families of the Russian Empire. But the world remained the same. As before, there is sacred Alongside (Vdoly’e) and dark, mystical Perpendicular (Poperech’e). Masha didn’t remember her deceased father well. She only knew that he belonged to the Alongside clan, married against his father’s will, and the family disowned him. Good thing that now Maria had a profession. She lived in a noisy, beautiful city—not starving, but modestly. So when the inheritance fell to her—an old estate in the protected forests of the Riverine region—she assessed it… ambiguously. However, people live in estates too: they visit neighbors for meals, go for walks, unravel secrets… and sometimes they fall in love. And the house could quite become her property, along with the land and the apple orchard—if only one condition is fulfilled.
