"The Upir" is a fantastic novella. Its events take place in Russia, but the origins of the incident lead to Italy, to which one of the characters transports the listeners through his account. The unreal in the story receives a psychological explanation…, one that nevertheless leaves us the freedom to decide whether something like that can be true or not.
Romantic fantasy permeates the novellas "The Family of the Vourdalak" and "A Meeting After Three Hundred Years." "Amenа" is a mystico-fantastic novella from the times of persecution of Christians, in which a pagan goddess turns into a denizen of Hell. No information has survived about the novel "Stebelovsky," an excerpt from which is this novella.
