A warrior returning from the front finds himself in the era of the Time of Troubles. In a world of chaos where everyone fights everyone, he must choose: which side to join and how to survive this bloody mess. Life in a war-torn world he has just returned from—and into which he will have to go again—is full of horrors. Even in the darkest dreams it’s impossible to imagine being thrown back into the distant past and taking part in a war where everyone fights everyone else. This period in Russian history is called the Time of Troubles for a reason. Everywhere there’s slaughter: all sides of the conflict have gone mad from the bloodshed—Poles against Russians, serfs against nobles, robbers plunder everyone they meet, Cossacks fight sometimes for one side, sometimes for another, but above all for themselves, living off raids. All Russian lands are drawn into this bloody meat grinder. It’s impossible to understand which tsar to swear allegiance to and serve, because there are too many claimants for the throne.
