Enemies, A Love Story

German Broder survived the Second World War almost by a miracle: the Polish peasant woman Yadwiga, who once worked in his home, hid him in the attic for years. After the war, learning that his wife and children had been shot by the Germans, German leaves with Yadwiga for America and marries her. In New York, he settles in the Jewish quarter, tries to write, and at the same time maintains a secret affair with a lover—a woman who, too, managed to survive the Holocaust. But the further it goes, the more deeply he sinks into memory and into his own feelings, losing his footing in reality, as though some unknown force were pushing him toward the limit. And the past that he believed to be buried forever suddenly makes itself known and returns.

«Enemies. A Love Story» is one of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s most famous novels (1902–1991), the author of «Sosha» and a Nobel Prize laureate honored for «emotional art of storytelling».
