Enemies

The story “Enemies” draws an existential “border situation,” combined with a conflict of a completely different kind—clarifying personal and social relationships. Dr. Kiriіlov’s only son dies. Immediately after this death, he must go in response to a summons from the landowner Abogin, whose wife has suffered a heart attack.
