Vladimir Sharov, a writer and historian, is known for his cult novels such as “Rehearsals,” “Before and During,” “The Old Girl,” and “Be Like Children.” In his works, he often uses historical reality turned upside down, as well as biblical plots.
His new novel “Return to Egypt” won the “Big Book” and “Russian Booker” awards. It is a story about a family connected by blood to Nikolai Vasilyevich Gogol, told through letters. The novel describes the 20th century, family gatherings on a Malorussian estate, the staging of “The Government Inspector,” the idea to continue “Dead Souls,” and how it influenced Russian history.
