The life of a full-time courier for the Zone group is full of no less danger than a lone stalker’s life. There are anomalies, monsters, and mutants of all kinds. And of course, bandits. So one day, a pro-stalker known as Biryuk finds himself in an impossible situation. Because of someone’s betrayal from his own side, he ends up in the clutches of bandits. All that’s left is to prepare for death. But then the legends of the Zone start to come alive. First, “The Black Monk” with a rifle does away with the bandits. True enough, later it turns out “The Black Monk” is just a Jesuit monk returning after the war to his native village in the zone of alienation. Then the monk introduces Biryuk to his childhood friend—essentially, a “Zone legend,” a Burer—who is in fact not a monster and not a mutant, but the last surviving goblin of the Chernobyl clan. Biryuk agrees to ferry him to his people, though he doesn’t yet know where or how. But that’s only the beginning—further on, there’s more: goblin clans, Scottish “highlanders,” dark and light elves, banshees… all of it is still ahead…
