At the center of the novel by Vasily Ardamatssky is the most complex operation carried out in the mid-1920s by our Chekists under the leadership of F.E. Dzerzhinsky, to uncover and destroy a counterrevolutionary conspiracy led by the ardent enemy of Soviet power, an experienced conspirator and terrorist—Boris Savinkov, a Right Socialist Revolutionary. The hardest duel with Savinkov had to be fought by Chekist A.P. Fyodorov. The narrative is built on a rich documentary material—letters and diaries of B. Savinkov, excerpts from protocols, and other archival documents.
