«The action takes place in a provincial town, in Murzavetskaya's house. A hall furnished in the old style; on the right side (from the audience) three windows, and between them narrow long mirrors with consoles beneath. By the first window, closer to the proscenium, there is a high armchair and a small table, on it an open old book and a bell; in the back, in the right corner, a double door to the large anteroom; on the left – a door to Murzavetsky's room; between the doors a stove; on the left side, in the corner, a door to the corridor leading to the inner rooms; closer to the proscenium, doors to the drawing room; between the doors a large dining table is pushed against the wall…»
