Everything was almost perfect for the rotmister Atrr Toot[a]—a past draped in recognition and glory, a reliable present, and a quite radiant future. Even his own personal, hand-held vampire. What he lacked was even the slightest bit of rest and a woman. There wasn’t any for a long time.
However, for an officer of the Combat Legion and a knight of the Flaming Cross, this is a trifle—an issue that can be fixed. The trouble is that in his homeland for Toot, Harraq, the same time he arrives, no one less than the head of the Metropolis counterintelligence comes as well—the mysterious Stranger. At a strategic site, there’s an attack by unknown assailants: secret documentation has been stolen, and Hontian and Pandeian saboteurs, they say, grow right on trees.
So without even turning around, the rotmister finds himself drawn into a strange war where the enemy is unknown, allies are always trying to strike from the back, and you can’t trust anyone. Massarakh! Well, on war—like on war…
