LEGENDARY PERFORMANCE — NOW IN AUDIO FORMAT!
Viktor Dobronravov, Ksenia Treister, Olga Lerman, Lyudmila Maksakova, Evgeny Knyazev and others — in a joint project by the State Academic Theatre named after Evgeny Vakhtangov and the Eksmo publishing house.
Rimas Tuminas’ production was created for the 100th anniversary of the theatre and, since then, has toured all across Russia, conquered international stages, and even moved beyond the theatre — to movie theatres. Today, it is the most in-demand performance of all based on Leo Tolstoy’s novel. In the year marking the centenary of Russian radio theatre, you can not only watch it, but also listen to it: the recording was made right from the stage using ten microphones, which gives a sense of presence and immerses you in a living, almost tangible atmosphere of the theatre.
Leo Tolstoy is one of the greatest writers in history, a master of realistic prose whose influence can be felt in many 20th-century authors both in Russia and beyond its borders. His main epic is “War and Peace.” It is a story about friendship and love, where hopes are replaced by disappointments, courage by fear, and personal destinies unfold against the backdrop of Russia and France in conflict. The novel reminds us of the fragility of beauty and the fleeting nature of human life, leaving a powerful and sometimes ambiguous aftertaste.
In the performance, families take center stage — the Rostovs, Bolkonskys, Kuragins, Drubetskoys… A person and their loved ones in an era of historical turning points. An exquisite, fragile, theatrical world gradually gets swept in by the “Comet of 1812,” overturning old notions and the familiar way of life.
