Her mother’s death overturned the familiar life of twelve-year-old Gulya. Her родная grandmother—whom Gulya had never seen before—takes her to her home, to a remote village called Zaózerye, where the girl must learn to live again.
Trying to find friends, Gulya encounters oddities in local life: people lock themselves in their houses as soon as the sun sets, because when night falls, other “inhabitants” of Zaózerye come out of the dark depths of the Black Lake… A mystical tale about the strength of family bonds, the fragility of the soul and the power of teenagers’ spirit, about friendship and betrayal, and, of course, about first love.
