The officers often entertained themselves with philosophical conversations, and one day the discussion turned to Kabbalah: some thought it was a serious science, while others saw only a source of profit for charlatans. Don Alvaro fell silent and watched one of his fellow officers—an able-bodied Fleming named Soberano. As it later turned out, that man had power over secret forces. Alvaro wanted to take up Kabbalah at once, despite his teacher’s warnings, answering thoughtlessly that he would pull the devil’s ears off.
