Description
Thomas Pynchon, like Salinger, is considered one of the most significant and mysterious American writers who had a tremendous influence on literature of the 20th and 21st centuries. From the time of his first works, Pynchon was recognized as a classic comparable to masters such as Nabokov, Joyce, and Borges. His characters often find themselves fascinated by themes of global conspiracy, social paranoia, and the search for hidden mechanisms that drive history.
The novel “Vinland” appeared almost 20 years after his previous work, the famous “Gravity’s Rainbow,” and became the first of two parts completed by “Inherent Vice” two more decades later. Many were surprised by the book’s clarity and directness, but it fully lived up to expectations. The action takes place in California, where the “children of flowers” continue fighting the repressive state system, ninja women find refuge in the forests, and the former keyboardist Zoyd Kolles together with his daughter, Prеria, search for the missing Frenzi Wratс—Zoyd’s wife and Prеria’s mother—who, it seems, has been kidnapped by an agent of Birk Bond.

In 2025, director Paul Thomas Anderson, known for “Boogie Nights,” “Magnolia,” “There Will Be Blood,” and “Master,” as well as for adapting Pynchon’s novel “Inherent Vice,” releases the film “Battle for Battle,” a free interpretation of “Vinland.” The leading roles are played by Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, and Sean Penn.

The translation is presented in an updated edition.
