The one whose value is hard to underestimate, who carries the title of the greatest poet in the history of the Russian Empire—Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin—rightfully is called as such. His name is known to people of all ages today, and his works remain interesting and in demand in every era, despite the fact that the poet lived about 200 years ago. Most people know Pushkin primarily as a poet, but one mustn’t underestimate his contribution to prose literature and drama, where he proved himself an equally skillful author. His books, collections, and publications have been translated into many languages of the world. However, according to some reviews of Pushkin’s poetic editions, it is difficult to convey his talent for handling Russian rhymes when translating his poems into other languages.
Interestingly, Pushkin’s father—the great Russian poet, playwright, and prose writer Alexander Sergeyevich Pushkin—was known in society as a secular wit and an amateur poet. Of course, the son went further. He became one of the most authoritative literary figures of the first third of the 19th century and is considered the founder of the modern Russian literary language. Even during his lifetime, he was called a genius. In the article “A Few Words About Pushkin,” the classic of literature N. V. Gogol wrote that “Pushkin is an extraordinary phenomenon—perhaps the only phenomenon of the Russian spirit: a Russian person in his development, as he may appear in two hundred years.”
