Vernon God Little

Vernon H. Little, a teenager from a provincial Texas town, becomes an accidental witness to a mass killing of his own classmates. The police get to him immediately: first as a witness, then as a possible accomplice, and finally—as the killer. The hero runs to Mexico, where a palm-filled paradise and his beloved girl await him, while meanwhile new and new crimes are being pinned on him.
