Description
In the adventure novel, J. Verne’s heroes travel along the Orinoco River and face many dangers. The goal of their journey is to establish the truth about the origin of the great river. Research into the upper reaches of the Orinoco River began only in 1872 and continued for the next 15 years; for the most part, the work was carried out by French scientists. The travelers’ findings were widely used by Jules Verne when writing the novel. However, even after these studies, for another fifty years the upper reaches of the great river and the neighboring Guiana Highlands remained poorly known to the civilized world. Exactly here, ten years later, Arthur Conan Doyle placed his “The Lost World.” The novel was written in three months and sent to the publisher for printing in 1897 (published in 1894).
