And, above all, the forest itself has changed. Its vegetation is artificially accelerated for extracting timber, and the forest has mutated. It lives its own life. It has risen against civilization: in its depths hide disease-carriers—berserk machines—and people there lose their biological nature. Though is it only biological…? The logging crews are no better than the world around them: they’re competitors to one another, and between them there’s war. The novel “Vegetation” is built according to the canons of many genres. It’s a road movie—an odyssey of a journey. It’s post-ap—post-apocalypse. It’s dieselpunk in the Russian backwoods. It’s a solid sci-fi novel—science fiction. The variety of species in anti-utopias resembles a mutagenic forest, yet “Vegetation” isn’t about where the heroes are going, but about where we ourselves are headed.
