Description
In this collection, reality intertwines with mysticism, coming alive in warm, sincere, and sometimes frightening stories inspired by ancient Slavic legends. Tefii called her collection “The Witch,” published in 1936, the most successful. Here, on these pages, characters from Slavic myths and fairy tales come to life—witches, forest spirits (leshii), household spirits (domovoi), mermaids, water spirits, and shapeshifters. These stories were heard by the writer in childhood in the Russian province and are conveyed with the warmth, sincerity, and humor characteristic of Tefii. Her expressive language, admired by Bunin, Kuprin, and Merezhkovsky, in this collection reaches perfection. The edition includes stories such as “The Household Spirit,” “The Leshachikha,” “Mermaid,” “It’s up to mischief,” and others from the collection “The Witch,” as well as selected stories from the book “An Unliving Beast” and additional tales.
