— “Pасічник” R (the debut work by Gogol), which became the beginning of his path into the world of great literature. Eight stories written in the style of the notes of the beekeeper Rudyi Pankyo (Ruddy Pan’ko) skillfully combine realism, fantasy, mysticism, comedy, and horror, creating a vivid, canonical image of Little Russia—so characteristic of Russian Romanticism. In each story, Gogol turns to folklore, depicting dark-browed “panochky” (young ladies of the gentry), daring youths with mustaches, appetizing dumplings, and horilka (vodka).
Gogol began writing the book in 1829, when he was still very young, suffering defeat after defeat in both acting and writing. The writer drew inspiration for the stories from his native Poltava region, where he personally observed rural life, customs, and character types that later came to life in his heroes.
The collection became a kind of experiment—using the illusion of oral folk storytelling, a novel rarity for the 19th century. The magic and mysticism of these tales are masterfully interwoven with everyday human life, creating that very “Gogolian” atmosphere and images that have endured for centuries and became a classic of Slavic folklore. Listen to the audio version of the stories of the beekeeper Rudyi Pan’ko—magical and musical, witty and mystical—performed brilliantly by Aleksey Bagdasarov, with atmospheric music by composer Vladimir Brus.
