“The ‘скасками’ (tales) were called in Russia messages that ‘seasoned’ people, after returning from their daring excursions, would present to their gracious patrons or rulers — and sometimes even to the sovereigns themselves. In the ‘скасках,’ the daredevils usually told about their travels and adventures, about their prowess in battles and about the sufferings of captivity among foreign people, who always tried to divert our daredevils from loving their homeland and lure them with rich gifts into their own subjects; but only our people remained steadfastly loyal to their tsar and their fatherland, rejecting and shaming all temptations from other people, and then inspiringly bragged about it. More or less interesting combinations of stories-without-truth and lies-without-story in this kind of tales make up the main content of all ‘скасок,’ and the characteristic traits of their wandering heroes are courage, patience, and loyalty…”
