The main character, Yegor Vozhnikov, accidentally finds himself in 1409. He becomes the leader of a group of uskoуi—a kind of river pirates—and successfully adapts to medieval Rus. Yegor falls in love with Princess Elena and decides to become a prince.

However, other local rulers do not recognize his power, and the Grand Prince Vasily threatens to execute him for impersonation. Yegor also faces threats from the Horde and from the treacherous Emir Edigei, an enemy of Rus. There are many claimants to the Horde’s throne, and internal strife prevents them from uniting against their enemies. Meanwhile, Lithuania and Prince Vytautas also pose a serious threat.

Now that he is the Prince of Zaozerye, Yegor understands that there may not be another chance to bring the Horde under his control. At the same time, Lithuania and Prince Vytautas also remain a serious threat.
