The Gang

“The Gang” by Вячеслав Шишков is a harsh and honest canvas of an era, carrying the listener to Siberia in 1919, where the element of the Civil War collides with the unbreakable power of the Siberian taiga.

At the heart of the story is Stepan Zykov, a “Chaldon” (chaldon), a man who decides to remake the world around him amid lawlessness and anarchy. The novel does not idealize any side of the conflict, showing how extreme circumstances reveal people’s true nature—their fears, their thirst for power, and their rare impulses to preserve their humanity.

Shishkov creates the effect of complete immersion: the roar of gunfire is replaced by the rustle of the taiga, while tense peasant assemblies give way to bloody reprisals. The author’s language is so precise and vivid that, before the listener’s inner eye, snow-covered expanses, the smoke of campfires, and the heroes’ faces frozen in tension come alive.

This is not merely a historical chronicle, but a profound exploration of the human soul on the edge of good and evil. “The Gang” will captivate all who value psychological prose, sweeping historical dramas, and the spirit of genuine Siberian freedom.
