A story by Vasil Bykov. Occupied Byelorussia. The Germans execute three prisoners, and the fourth—Sushchenya—is released as bait in order to follow the trail of partisans.
Sushchenya is unjustly turned into an outsider among his own, who are sure of his betrayal.
All this leads to a tragic denouement…
